Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that typically affects one limb, usually after an injury. It’s characterized by prolonged or excessive pain and changes in skin color, temperature, and swelling in the affected area. CRPS is divided into two types: CRPS-I, which occurs without a confirmed nerve injury, and CRPS-II, which follows a distinct nerve injury.
The exact cause of CRPS isn’t fully understood, but it’s believed to result from an abnormal response of the nervous system to trauma. This response leads to persistent pain even after the initial injury has healed. Factors such as inflammation, immune system dysfunction, and abnormal pain processing in the brain are also thought to contribute to the condition.
Symptoms of CRPS vary but often include burning or throbbing pain, sensitivity to touch or temperature, swelling, changes in skin color, and reduced mobility in the affected limb. These symptoms can be mild or severe, and they may spread from the original site of the injury to other parts of the body.
Treatment for CRPS focuses on relieving pain and improving function. Options include physical therapy, medications like pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs, nerve blocks, and in some cases, psychological therapies to help manage the emotional impact of chronic pain. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing the condition from worsening.
